12 February 2010

Stevie Wonder and Muse officially confirmed for Glastonbury

As expected, Muse will headline the Saturday night (June 26th), while Motown legend and UK festival virgin Stevie Wonder will have the prestigious honour of closing The Pyramid Stage on the Sunday night.

Muse singer Matt Bellamy told the BBC he has special memories of the festival after headlining it in 2004.

He said: "When you go out to the countryside and look at some cows and breathe in some fresh air and watch some good music, I think everyone connects with something which has been missing from city life."

As previously announced, U2 are headlining the Friday night of Glastonbury in what will be their debut performance at the festival.

2010 marks the event's 40th anniversary. All 175,000 tickets are completely sold out. Keep it tuned to VF for more announcements over the coming weeks.

Glastonbury festival granted licence until 2016

11 February 2010

Glastonbury festival granted licence until 2016

For the first time ever, it was processed without the need for a hearing, because there were no objections.

There will be a fallow year in 2012, to let the site at Worthy Farm, Pilton recover, after roughly 200,000 crew and festival-goers have been stomping around.

The detailed application includes a request for extended car parking and camping space to be made available, and for car parks and campervan areas to open on Tuesday.

The festival organisers will keep fans abreast of future changes.

Another alteration in the licence is stopping performances on The Pyramid, Jazz World and Other Stage at midnight, although increased volumes have been permitted.

Smaller stages will be able to operate until 12.30am and The Park area will have artists performing on it from the Thursday.

Tickets for this year’s bash, which takes place from Wednesday 23 - Sunday 27 June, are already sold out.

So far, the first of three headliners U2 have confirmed their slot for the Friday, with Muse and Stevie Wonder strongly rumoured as the other two main stage acts on the Saturday and Sunday respectively.

Meanwhile Corinne Bailey Rae, Jack Johnson, My Luminaire, John E Vistic have self-confirmed their appearances, whilst The Wombles are reported to be in discussions with organisers (if you believe The Sun).

Regarding the rumour that Stevie Wonder is to headline the Sunday (27 June) of the festival, a Glastonbury spokesperson told BBC 6Music: "It is very much a possibility but he's still only on Michael Eavis' wish list - so not 100% confirmed, it's pending."

Glastonbury Festival line-up nears completion

Glastonbury Festival line-up nears completion

The main stage bill for the event’s 40th anniversary edition is nearly confirmed, with boss Emily Eavis hinting that one headliner has never played the Somerset bash before.

“We’re still slightly confirming the Sunday night headliner but apart from that, we’ve pretty much finalised the Pyramid Stage which is good,”
the festival chief told BBC 6Music.

“We’re very, very pleased with it. It’s a 40 year celebration this year so we’ve got some amazing highlights from the full 40 years and also some people who haven’t played before, one headliner in particular, so we’re very pleased with it.”

As usual, Glastonbury bosses have kept their cards close to their chest, catalysing rumours of a top spot for a monster act such as Beyonce or long-term target Stevie Wonder.

With only U2 confirmed to headline on the Friday there has been rife speculation that Muse will top the bill on the Saturday, but Emily Eavis has warned against believing the hype.

“I think this is the first year that people genuinely don’t know who is going to be playing, which is a good thing,”
she commented.

She also told the radio station that fans can expect an end to the rumours soon, claiming, “We’re hoping to announce the names soon because I think there’s an air of desperation and I understand that people want to know, so as soon as we can, we will announce the names."

Surf rocker Jack Johnson and My Luminaries are the only acts alongside U2 that are officially confirmed.

According to the publication’s website, the festival’s founder said that Matt Bellemy and Co will top the bill on the Saturday (26 June) before ‘Superstition’ star Wonder will bring the event to a close on the Sunday (27 June).

Eavis apparently revealed the acts whilst attending The Event Production Show in London, but reporters failed to supply a direct quote.

When we contacted Glastonbury Festival for more information, a spokesperson said: "The only people confirmed are U2 and Jack Johnson who are already on the website. It’s all rumours."

Other rumours for the event include Fatboy Slim, Spandau Ballet, Dizzee Rascal, MGMT and Julian Casablancas.

For many, the inclusion of the band alongside U2 at the top of the bill would have been a fairytale pairing, but Mick Jagger and Co have this morning (Tuesday) confirmed that they won’t be hitting the road in 2010.

Will Young, Dizzee Rascal for Glastonbury 2010?

4 January 2010

Will Young, Dizzee Rascal for Glastonbury 2010?

The event, which this year celebrates its 40th anniversary, will be headlined by U2 on the Friday (25 June) night, with Eavis announcing that a second headliner had also been booked just before Christmas.

Speaking to Lauren Lavern on BBC 6Music this morning (Monday), the co-organiser suggested more acts that might appear at the festival. "We’ve gotta have Dizzee [Rascal]," Eavis admitted, "I think that’s a given," before adding that Will Young, "might be making an appearance".

But for now it would seem that the team's efforts are focused on capturing a bigger name. “We are working on it full time and we’re trying to get our third headliner at the moment which is quite exciting," said Eavis.

Organisers originally wanted to have an act from every year of the festival performing in 2010 and Eavis suggested that their plan may just be falling into place. "A lot of bands really want to play but because we’ve only got three nights to headline, I think a lot of people are going to be doing secret sets," she said. "There will be a lot of surprises, more than we’ve ever had.

"It’s really interesting booking it because a lot of bands are saying, 'We really want to do it but how about we open the Pyramid Stage rather than close it?' And it’s like, 'That’s a good idea'. There’s quite a lot of stuff going around, so that’s exciting."

Muse are tipped to headline the event with the likes of Fatboy Slim, The Destroyers, Robert Plant and David Celia also rumoured to be appearing.

Rumours had been circulating that the group were due to top the bill on the Sunday night of the festival but, according to NME.com, a Glastonbury spokesperson has said that it is “unlikely”.

Glastonbury 2010: Bowie says no, Muse say probably

But, contrary to newspaper reports, Mr Ziggy Stardust is unlikely to make his first full live appearance for six years at the Somerset event.

“The Mail Online has posted a piece suggesting that David Bowie is “considering an offer” to appear at next year’s 40th anniversary Glastonbury Festival,” a post on DavidBowie.com reads, “Sadly there is absolutely no substance to this story.”

There may be a little more reasoning behind the ongoing Muse rumour though, with television presenter Jonathan Ross using this Twitter account to fuel gossip.

According to Ross, who had the band perform on his BBC One programme, the Teignmouth group are ‘probably’ going to appear at the festival in 2010.

He Tweeted, “Didn't chat to them on the show, but Matt [Bellamy] told me they are probably doing it."

The social networking site was the chosen medium for Wireless Festival organisers to name their first act as well with Pink set to follow in the footsteps of Kanye West and Basement Jaxx by playing London's Hyde Park in July.

“Stop press - It’s just been announced that @PiNk will headlining Wireless 2010 in Hyde Park. Exciting times – roll on the summer,” they Tweeted, but event bosses are yet to announce the exact dates of the festival.

said Wilson, “and he said he had been asked to play at the festival."

2010 will be the 40th anniversary of the event and organiser Michael Eavis has promised to book “a band from each year of the festival’s history,” but also admitted that they are trying for the world’s best headliners to top the bill.

In other Glastonbury news, an “impeccable source” has confirmed that the Leftfield Stage is due to return after it was omitted from last year’s event.

Glastonbury 2010 car parks to open early

Ticket-holders will be able to arrive and wait in the car parks on the Tuesday to prevent a repeat of the traffic jams that marred the start of the festival in June.

Fans won’t be able to get on site until the festival gates open on the Wednesday, but bosses have promised portable toilets and stalls to make the wait more bearable.

Speaking about the move, festival chief Michael Eavis admitted allowing people to wait in their cars would be better than them, “being lined up by the side of the road for six hours."

As always though, bosses are urging people to arrive by public transport which, according to Eavis, saves "a hell of a lot of traffic and saves a lot of space."

Glastonbury 2010 tickets on sale next month

Passes for the event, which will celebrate its 40th anniversary next June, will be available from 4 October at 9am.

Speaking about the first festival back in 1970, organiser Michael Eavis said: "Back then we'd had a few cancellations and were struggling a bit. We needed to pull someone in to save the day. Luckily Marc Bolan, a huge star at the time, was driving along the A361 on his way to play Butlins in Minehead and we managed to get to him... The rest, of course, is history!

"Now I'm fully confident that the anniversary line-up will be just that little bit special when it is revealed next year. We want as many people as possible to be part of the celebrations and to enjoy what we do here."

Tickets are priced at £185 plus a £5 booking fee. Those wishing to purchase must be registered before 2 October.

Passes will be available via www.seetickets.com and through the dedicated phone line 0844 412 4635. An international sales line can be found on the official Glastonbury Festival website along with full information on the registration and ticketing process.

Anyone aged 13 or over who wishes to buy a ticket MUST be registered at least 48 hours before they buy a ticket in order to ensure they have a valid registration number to complete the transaction. Customers will have the option of buying a full ticket up front - or paying a deposit of £50 to reserve a ticket, with the full balance due by the closing date of 28 February 2010.

Michael Eavis added: "We have the fairest ticketing operation available anywhere. With this scheme, backed by the all-important registration process, everyone has an equal chance of getting a ticket. And most importantly, every ticket will ONLY be going to a genuine festival-goer direct."

Glastonbury Festival 2010 will take place at Worthy Farm, Somerset from 23-27 June.

Glastonbury 2010: 'trying for the world's best headliners'

Glastonbury 2010: 'trying for the world's best headliners'

The festival chief and farmer is looking to trump the success of 2009 in June 2010 when Glastonbury celebrates its 40th anniversary.

“People are very interested in this 40 year thing,” said Eavis, “everywhere I go, people are asking about. The expectations are really high. So we have to deliver on that. We're trying to get the best headliners in the world.”

The usual suspects are likely to pop up on the rumour mill, especially after Radiohead, Coldplay and Muse all gave Worthy Farm a miss last summer.

But this time around Eavis is keeping his headliners a close guarded secret. When asked if he can give away any clues about next year’s bill toppers, Eavis said: “Not really at this stage. But I see they're moving the Michael Jackson tribute concert to Wembley Stadium in June next year, so there'll be a lot of artists around for that, hopefully.”

So keep your eyes peeled for the Jackson tribute line-up. In other festival news, tickets for Glastonbury Festival 2010 are set to go on sale on 4 October.

Nominate your Most Memorable Moment of 2009

In previous years we’ve left it up to our journalists to choose the unforgettable events that have stood out all summer, but this year it’s up to you.

Here are a few we’ve come up with to see the sort of thing we’re after:

Thom Yorke giving ‘True Love Waits’ a very rare and intimate outing during his solo set at Latitude Festival.

The sea of Chinese lanterns floating above an exploding Tower Of Babel at Secret Garden Party.

Amy Winehouse’s surprise appearance at V Festival, joining The Specials onstage for ‘You’re Wondering Now’ and ‘Ghost Town’
